How to remove stains from a fabric sofa (and when to stop)

Published 2026-10-05 · Steam & Shine team

A spill on a fabric sofa is a race against absorption. What you do in the first few minutes decides whether the mark becomes a stain — and what you do wrong can set it permanently.

The first five minutes

  • Blot, never rub. Press a clean dry cloth or paper towel onto the spill to lift liquid out. Rubbing pushes it deeper and spreads it wider.
  • Work from the outside in. Treating the edges first stops the mark from spreading.
  • Scrape solids off first. Use a blunt knife or spoon edge — lifting, not pressing.
  • Test anything wet on a hidden patch first, like the back skirt or under a cushion.

What usually works at home

For fresh water-based spills (juice, tea, mud once dry), a small amount of mild dish soap in cool water, blotted on and blotted off, is usually safe on common sofa fabrics. For greasy marks, a little dry baking soda left for 15 minutes and vacuumed can lift surface oil. Less is more — a soaking wet patch dries into a tide mark that looks worse than the original spill.

What makes it worse

  • Hot water on protein stains (milk, blood, egg) — it cooks the stain into the fibre
  • Bleach or strong detergents — they strip colour unevenly and weaken fabric
  • Coloured cloths — dye transfer is a second stain on top of the first
  • Over-wetting — moisture soaks into the cushion foam and can smell for weeks

When to call a professional

Call before you experiment if the sofa is leather or suede, the stain is old or unknown, the fabric has no cleaning label, or the spill is large or greasy. We treat stains with targeted products matched to the fabric, and we will tell you honestly beforehand what can and cannot be achieved. A fabric sofa cleans at Ksh 700 per seat.
