How to keep a mattress fresh between deep cleans
Published 2026-10-05 · Steam & Shine team
A mattress absorbs sweat, sheds skin cells and collects dust every single night — around a third of your life, on one surface. You cannot put it in a washing machine, but a few habits keep it genuinely fresh between professional cleans.
- Air it every morning. Pull the duvet back for 30 minutes before making the bed so overnight moisture escapes instead of soaking in.
- Use a washable mattress protector. It catches sweat and spills before they reach the mattress, and it goes in a normal wash.
- Vacuum the surface monthly. An upholstery attachment removes dust and skin cells that feed dust mites — include the edges and seams.
- Rotate it every three months. Head-to-foot rotation spreads wear and stops body impressions forming.
- Sun it when you can. On a hot dry day, an hour of direct sun on each side kills odour-causing bacteria and drives out moisture.
Smells and small accidents
For a stale smell, a light dusting of baking soda left for a few hours and vacuumed off helps. For fresh spills or urine, blot immediately with dry towels, use minimal liquid, and get airflow on the spot — a fan or open window. A mattress that stays damp inside is worse than a stained one.
When it needs a deep clean
Home care manages the surface; it does not reach the soil worked into the layers. Signs it is time: visible staining, a smell that returns within days, allergy symptoms that ease when you sleep elsewhere, or simply more than a year since the last clean. We clean mattresses on site — 3x6 from Ksh 2,000, up to 6x6 at Ksh 3,500 — dried efficiently the same day in most cases.
